Sussex camera fines totalled £4m last year

Post by jason on Wed Apr 30, 2008 4:45 pm

The total cost to motorists caught breaking the rules of the road by speed cameras in Sussex last year was more than £4 million, new research has indicated.

According to statistics reported by the Argus, £4.11 million was issued in fixed penalty notices by officials, with £3 million already paid back by road users.

The publication added that 68,000 cars were found breaking the law over the course of the 2006/07 financial year.

It may be that those who picked up a road conviction have difficulty taking out a cheap car or motorbike insurance deal in future, as they could be viewed as a road risk by drivers.

East Worthing and Shoreham MP Tim Loughton commented that cameras are more of a method of generating revenue than improving road safety.

"While we need to do much more to cut down on serious accidents, there are many more ways of doing that rather than just relying on the blunt instrument of a speed camera," said the official.
